Méribel

Méribel sits in the Les Allues Valley at the heart of the world’s largest ski area, Les Trois Vallées. With over 600km of pistes The Three Valleys is the largest ski area in the world. With its highly efficient lift system you can ski for days without ever getting bored and the connections between the valleys make exploring the huge variety of pistes from the Courchevel valley over to Val Thorens incredibly easy. As part of a world class ski area Méribel is a very popular choice for skiers of all abilities. If you are looking to cruise down corduroy blue runs, tackle some tough reds, blacks or moguls then there is plenty of skiing for all levels. If you are travelling with the family then little ones will love the snow parks, especially the Piste des Inuits and the Yeti Park at Mottaret.

Méribel and Mottaret are the two main resorts in this valley and both are extremely popular with British skiers, possibly because a British man called Peter Lindsay founded the resort in 1938. However the vast skiing area and the unspoilt alpine charm of Méribel are the most likely reasons for its enduring appeal among skiers from all over the world. Méribel is a really picturesque resort, unlike some of its purpose-built rivals and retains a traditional feel. Nearly all of the buildings are low rise quaint, timber-framed chalets built in a Savoyard wood and stone style.

Non-skiing activities

There is plenty to keep non-skiers occupied on a winter trip to Méribel. There are many scenic walks for either snow shoeing or on foot around Meribel and Mottaret as well as the nearby valley of Courchevel and La Tania. These can be easily accessed with the pedestrian lift pass. If you are planning on meeting up for lunch at a mountain restaurant with the skiers in your party then there are plenty of restaurants that can be accessed by lift, thereby giving you the amazing “top of the world” mountain views, without ever having to put on a pair of skis.

The Olympic sports centre in Méribel was opened for the 1992 Olympics. There is an ice rink, which also hosts regular ice hockey matches which really are not to be missed. The centre also houses a swimming pool and gym offering cardio and fitness training, weight rooms, rowing machines and spin bikes. The Spa area at Parc Olympic offers beauty treatments, massages or access to the sauna, Turkish bath, steam room and spa facilities. If you fancy a little pampering there are a number of hotels with luxury spas and pools and a wide variety of in house treatments. Therapists can also be booked to come to your chalet or hotel and individual yoga sessions can also be arranged.

For the more adventurous ski / horse jouring is a combination of skiing and riding. To try this sport you simply need a good basic level of skiing. Méribel has a small secure arena to get to grips with the basics of ski jouring and when you are confident enough you can enjoy a safe and wonderful trip in the forest! For the more thrill seeking amongst us husky sledging, balloon flights and snow-mobile safaris can all be booked.
