Driving to the Alps
It probably goes without saying that the easiest way to get to Méribel is to fly to Geneva and book a Meriski Airport Transfer.
However, there may be times when this isn’t possible. So, is driving to the Alps for your ski holiday really an option?
We absolutely think it is!
If you are booking late for peak weeks, flights can be prohibitively expensive or often fully booked. Flying at busy times can also be a little stressful, with crowded airports and long queues!
Aside from your channel crossing, driving can be done at your own pace. The journey can become part of your holiday with as many stops as you like – shopping, visiting towns and enjoying fine food and wine along the way. And of course, you can stock up on wine on the way home!
The drive itself is straightforward, all on motorways with a cost in tolls of approximately €100 each way.
With no airline luggage restrictions you can pack as much as you want in the car. This is especially useful if you have your own skis and snowboards – no airline surcharges!
Do make sure you are aware of all French laws for driving in France. The AA has a good guide here, in particular the need to carry snow chains on mountain roads.
Most of our chalets have an area where you can park a car or alternatively you may want to consider parking in one of the secure underground car parks in Méribel for the week.
The total driving time from Calais to Méribel is approximately nine hours so although it is possible to do it in a day, you could always take a more leisurely approach and find a place to stay en-route.
At just over five hours from Calais, Burgundy is a good place to stop. There are some good hotels and B&B’s close to the motorway with excellent restaurants within walking distance.
Here are a couple of Meriski’s Managing Director, Huw’s favourites:
‘One is Located in the beautiful village of Curtil Vergy near Nuits St George Hotel Manasses, with a lovely restaurant a two minute walk away, Auberge Au Petit Bonheur.
Another is in Vougeot, Hotel de Vougeot. They offer wine and platters of cold meats or alternatively there are restaurants within walking distance’.
Whether you decide to fly or drive, with our many years of experience we can advise you on all the best travel options and are always on hand to answer any questions that you have.
We look forward to helping you plan your perfect ski holiday!
